Overview

The pad determines whether a structure settles or stays true

A building pad looks simple from the surface, but what happens below the finished grade is what determines whether your home, shop, or barn stays level for decades or starts showing cracks and shifts within a few years. Organic material, soft spots, poor drainage, and inadequate compaction are the enemies of a stable structure.

Pacific Earthworks builds building pads from the ground up. We strip organic material, bring the grade to the right elevation with cut and fill, place structural fill in compacted lifts, and finish with base rock and a drainage slope that moves water away from the building footprint. Every step is done with the final structure in mind, because fixing a bad pad after a slab is poured is a far more expensive problem than doing it right the first time.

Whether the site is flat and clear or sloped and wooded, we have the equipment and the process to deliver a pad that is ready to build on.

Building Pad FAQs

What is a building pad and why does it matter?

A building pad is a prepared, compacted area of ground that gives a structure a stable, level base. The pad determines whether a home, shop, barn, or outbuilding settles evenly or shifts over time. A poorly prepared pad is one of the leading causes of foundation cracking and long-term structural problems. Getting it right before anything is built is far less expensive than fixing it afterward.

How much does a building pad cost in Southern Oregon?

Cost depends on the size of the pad, how much cut and fill is required, soil conditions, the depth of structural fill needed, and whether clearing or stump removal is involved. Sloped or wooded lots require more earthwork than a flat open site. The best way to get an accurate number is a free on-site quote, call (541) 512-5280.

How is a pad compacted and tested?

We compact structural fill in lifts, typically six to eight inches at a time, using compaction equipment suited to the material. Compaction testing can be coordinated through a geotechnical firm or your engineer when a pad certification is required for a permit or lender. We will let you know what your project needs and help coordinate the process.

Can you build a pad on a slope or wooded lot?

Yes. Sloped and wooded lots are common in Southern Oregon, and preparing a building pad on them requires clearing, grubbing, cut and fill earthwork, and careful drainage planning. Pacific Earthworks has the equipment and the experience to handle all of that on the same project.

What materials go into a good pad?

A sound building pad typically starts with stripping topsoil and organic material, followed by compacted structural fill placed in lifts, a layer of base rock or crushed aggregate, and a positive drainage slope away from the building footprint. The specific materials depend on soil conditions, the load the structure will place on the pad, and any engineering requirements.

How long does pad work take?

Timeline depends on the size of the pad, the amount of clearing and earthmoving required, and the weather. A straightforward pad on a relatively clear lot can often be completed in a few days. Larger pads on wooded or sloped ground take longer. We give you a realistic schedule estimate with your quote.
