Foundation Excavation & Prep
Foundation Excavation & Prep in Southern Oregon
Proper excavation, compaction, footings, stem walls and slab prep, the groundwork everything else stands on, across Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland and the rest of the Rogue Valley.
Overview
The groundwork everything else stands on
A building is only as good as its foundation, and a foundation is only as good as the ground it sits on. In Southern Oregon's varied terrain, that means excavating to the right depth, compacting fill in measured lifts, and getting drainage away from the structure before any concrete is ever poured.
Pacific Earthworks handles the full earthwork scope for foundations: excavating the footprint, removing unsuitable material, placing and compacting structural fill, setting up for footings and stem walls, and coordinating handoffs to your concrete and framing crews. We work on flat valley floor lots and on the steeper, rockier ground common in the hills around Williams, Jacksonville, and Ashland.
Every site is different. We assess soil conditions, required bearing depth, and drainage before we dig so there are no surprises when the inspector shows up or the concrete truck rolls in.

What We Offer
Foundation excavation services
- Foundation excavation, cutting to the correct depth and footprint for footings or slabs
- Over-excavation & structural fill, removing unsuitable material and replacing it with engineered fill
- Compaction to spec, compacting fill in lifts and coordinating compaction testing when required
- Footings & stem walls, layout, forming coordination and earthwork for continuous and spread footings
- Monolithic & slab-on-grade, full base prep for poured slabs including sub-base and moisture considerations
- Foundation drainage, perimeter drain installation and drainage slopes to keep water away from the structure
- Backfill & final grade, clean backfill compacted in lifts and final grading away from the foundation

Why Pacific Earthworks
Why builders trust us with foundation prep
Compaction Done Right
We compact fill in proper lifts and coordinate with inspectors, so your foundation bears on ground that won't settle after the building goes up.
Licensed & Code-Ready
CCB #239526. We build to code, coordinate with local inspectors, and flag issues before the pour, not after.
Crew Coordination
We sequence our earthwork with your concrete and framing crews so there's no waiting, no rework, and no surprises on pour day.

Questions, Answered
Foundation Excavation FAQs
Why does foundation prep matter so much?
The foundation is the single point of contact between your structure and the earth it sits on. Poor compaction, skipped drainage, or inadequate bearing depth can cause settling, cracking, and structural movement that's expensive or impossible to fix after the fact. Getting excavation, compaction, and drainage right before the first footing is poured is the most cost-effective investment in any building project.
How much does foundation excavation cost in Southern Oregon?
Cost depends on the size of the footprint, soil and rock conditions, required depth, whether over-excavation and structural fill are needed, and site access. Sloped and rocky lots typically cost more than flat open ground. The most accurate way to get a number is a free on-site quote, call (541) 512-5280.
What is compaction and why is it important?
Compaction is the process of mechanically densifying soil or fill material so it can support a structural load without settling. Fill that hasn't been compacted to spec will compress under the weight of a building over time, leading to uneven settlement and foundation cracking. Pacific Earthworks compacts in lifts and can coordinate with inspectors when compaction testing is required.
Do you pour concrete or just excavate?
Pacific Earthworks handles the earthwork side: excavation, over-excavation, structural fill, compaction, formwork coordination, and drainage. We work closely with concrete and framing crews, and can coordinate the full sequence, but the concrete pour itself is handled by your concrete contractor. We make sure the ground is ready for them so the pour goes right.
How deep do footings need to be in Southern Oregon?
Oregon's frost depth varies by elevation. In the lower Rogue Valley, footings are typically required to extend at least 12–18 inches below finish grade, but your local jurisdiction and soil conditions may require more. Sites at higher elevations, such as the Williams area, may require deeper footings. We coordinate with local building departments to ensure depth requirements are met.
Can you prep a foundation on a sloped or hillside lot?
Yes. Sloped lots require careful cut-and-fill work, bench excavation, and drainage planning to keep the pad stable and free of water intrusion. We have the equipment and experience to work on the hilly terrain common throughout Josephine and Jackson Counties, including Williams, Jacksonville, and Ashland.
