Overview

Precise trenching, done safely and done right

Getting a utility, drainage line, or footing trench right requires more than just digging a ditch. It requires knowing what is already underground, digging to the correct depth and width, bedding the pipe properly, and compacting the backfill so the ground above stays solid for years.

Pacific Earthworks handles every part of the process. We call for utility locates before any machine touches the ground, then dig with appropriately sized equipment to fit the job, whether that is a compact excavator working beside a foundation or a larger machine cutting through rocky Rogue Valley soil. We bed and backfill according to pipe material and cover requirements, then compact in lifts to prevent settling.

From a short water-service trench at a home in Grants Pass to a long drainage run across a rural Williams property, we bring the same attention to depth, grade, and compaction to every trench we cut.

Questions, Answered

Trenching FAQs

How much does trenching cost in Southern Oregon?

Cost depends on the length and depth of the trench, soil conditions, whether rock is present, the type of bedding and backfill required, and proximity to existing utilities or structures. The best way to get an accurate number is a free on-site quote, call (541) 512-5280.

How deep should a trench be?

Required depth depends on what the trench is for. Water and sewer lines typically need to be below the frost line, which in Southern Oregon is generally 12 to 18 inches. Electrical conduit, gas lines, and drainage pipes each have code-specified minimum cover requirements. We dig to the depth your application requires.

Do you call for utility locates before digging?

Yes, always. We contact Oregon 811 (Call Before You Dig) before every project that involves ground disturbance. Locating existing underground utilities is a non-negotiable first step, and we hand-dig or use careful mechanical methods in congested areas to protect lines already in the ground.

Can you trench through rock or hard ground?

Yes. Southern Oregon has plenty of rocky and hard-packed ground. Pacific Earthworks has the equipment and operator experience to handle difficult digging conditions, including rock and the compacted clay soils common across the Rogue Valley.

Do you backfill and compact afterward?

Yes. Proper backfill and compaction are part of every trench we dig. We bed the pipe correctly, backfill in lifts, and compact to prevent settling that could damage the pipe or the surface above it.

Can you trench close to a house, driveway, or landscaping?

Yes. Precision matters most when working near a foundation, driveway, or mature landscaping. We select appropriately sized equipment for tight access and take care to protect surfaces and vegetation surrounding the work area.
