Pond Excavation & Construction in Southern Oregon
Irrigation ponds, livestock ponds, fire-suppression water sources, and aesthetic ponds, shaped, sealed, and built to hold water on rural and residential properties across the Rogue Valley.
Overview
A pond that holds water starts with the earthwork done right
Southern Oregon's dry summers and fire-prone landscape make on-property water storage more than an amenity, for many rural properties it's a practical necessity. A pond that holds through summer serves irrigation, livestock, and fire suppression all at once. But a pond that leaks or silts in is just an expensive hole in the ground.
Pacific Earthworks handles pond construction from site assessment through finished grade. That starts with understanding your soil, whether native clay will seal the basin or whether a liner is the right call, and shaping the basin with the depth and side slopes that give you maximum water volume for the excavation involved. Proper berm construction, a controlled spillway, and thoughtfully designed inlet and outlet structures are the details that keep a pond functional season after season.
We work on irrigation ponds, stock and livestock ponds, fire-suppression reservoirs, and property ponds on acreage across the Rogue Valley. Each project is different, and Pacific Earthworks builds the pond to fit your land, your water source, and your intended use.

Questions, Answered
Pond Excavation FAQs
How much does it cost to build a pond in Southern Oregon?
Cost depends on the size and depth of the basin, soil conditions (clay-rich soils seal naturally; sandy or porous soils require a liner), site access, the complexity of the inlet, outlet, and spillway design, and any rock or boulder edging. A small stock pond costs considerably less than a large irrigation or fire-suppression pond. The best way to get an accurate figure is a free on-site quote, call (541) 512-5280.
Will my pond hold water, clay versus liner?
Whether a pond holds water without a liner depends entirely on your soil. Properties with deep, high-plasticity clay often have soils that self-seal well when properly compacted. Sandy, gravelly, or fractured-rock soils will not seal naturally and require either a compacted clay blanket brought in or a liner to hold water. Pacific Earthworks assesses your soil before recommending an approach so you don't invest in a basin that leaks.
Do I need a permit or water right for a pond in Oregon?
It depends on the pond's purpose and water source. In Oregon, impounding or diverting a natural watercourse typically requires a water right from the Oregon Water Resources Department. Ponds fed by groundwater or capturing runoff from your own land fall under different rules. A permit may also be required from the county for earthwork above certain thresholds. We can describe the typical regulatory landscape, but we recommend consulting with Oregon WRD or your county planning office for your specific situation before breaking ground.
What can a pond be used for, irrigation, livestock, fire suppression?
All of the above, often simultaneously. Irrigation ponds store water for gravity-fed or pumped systems during dry summer months. Livestock and stock ponds provide reliable water for cattle, horses, and other animals. Fire-suppression ponds are increasingly valuable on rural Southern Oregon properties and can satisfy defensible-space water requirements. Aesthetic ponds add beauty and habitat value. Pacific Earthworks designs the basin, outlet, and access around the pond's intended uses from the start.
How big can you build a pond?
Pacific Earthworks handles pond excavation across a wide range of sizes, from modest stock ponds to large multi-acre irrigation reservoirs, using full-size excavation equipment. Size is primarily limited by your site, available fill areas for spoil, water availability, and any applicable permit thresholds. We'll discuss what size makes sense for your land and purpose during a free on-site consultation.
What time of year is best to dig a pond in Southern Oregon?
Late spring through early fall, when soils are workable and dry enough to excavate and compact effectively, is generally the best window for pond construction in the Rogue Valley. Wet winter conditions make shaping and sealing more difficult and can destabilize fresh earthwork. That said, scheduling and site conditions vary, and Pacific Earthworks will assess your specific situation and time the work to match the conditions at your property.
