Natural Swimming Ponds
Natural Swimming Pond Construction in Southern Oregon
Chemical-free, biologically filtered swimming ponds that look like they belong on the land, a swim zone and a planted regeneration zone working together to keep water crystal clear without chlorine, across Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland and the Rogue Valley.
Overview
How a natural swimming pond works, and why it works so well
A natural swimming pond is divided into two connected zones: the swim zone, where you actually swim, and the regeneration zone, a shallower planted area filled with aquatic vegetation and gravel substrate. Water circulates continuously between the two. In the regeneration zone, plants and beneficial microorganisms extract nutrients and suspended particles from the water biologically, no chlorine, no chemicals, no synthetic filtration.
The result is clear, soft water maintained entirely by living biology. The pond becomes part of the landscape rather than an installation sitting on top of it. Rock and boulder edging blend the waterline into the surrounding terrain, and an optional waterfall or stream section adds both sound and additional oxygenation that supports the biological process.
Pacific Earthworks handles the full scope, site evaluation and siting consultation, precision excavation of both zones, liner installation, biological filtration setup, rock edging, and the surrounding grading that ties the pond seamlessly into your property.

What We Build
Natural swimming pond services
- Design & siting consultation, evaluating sun exposure, soil, slope, and property layout to position the pond correctly
- Excavation & shaping of swim and regeneration zones, precise earthwork to create the right depths and proportions for both zones
- Liner installation, quality liner work that protects the pond structure and holds water at the correct level
- Biological & plant filtration zones, gravel substrate and aquatic planting to establish and sustain natural water clarity
- Rock & boulder edging, natural stone placed to blend the waterline into the surrounding landscape
- Circulation & skimming systems, low-energy pumps and skimmers that keep water moving through the regeneration zone
- Integrated waterfalls & stream sections, adding oxygenation, sound, and visual flow to the finished pond
- Access & surrounding grading, safe entry points, steps, and graded surrounds that tie the whole feature into the site

Questions, Answered
Natural Swimming Pond FAQs
What is a natural swimming pond and how does it stay clean?
A natural swimming pond is divided into two connected zones: a swimming zone where you swim, and a regeneration zone planted with aquatic vegetation. Water circulates between the two. In the regeneration zone, plants, gravel substrate, and beneficial microorganisms break down nutrients and filter the water biologically, no chlorine, no chemicals. The result is clear, soft water kept clean entirely by natural processes.
How much does a natural swimming pond cost in Southern Oregon?
Cost depends on the size of both zones, site access, soil conditions, liner type, rock and boulder edging, and the circulation and skimming system. A well-built natural swimming pond is a significant investment, excavation, liner, biological filtration, and surrounding stonework all factor in. The best way to get an accurate figure for your specific site is a free on-site consultation, call (541) 512-5280.
Are natural swimming ponds hard to maintain?
Once established, typically after the first full growing season, maintenance is generally less demanding than a chlorinated pool. You'll manage the regeneration zone plants seasonally, remove excess debris, and keep the pump and skimmer clear. There are no chemicals to dose and no filter equipment requiring special handling.
Do natural swimming ponds freeze or work in the Southern Oregon climate?
Southern Oregon's climate is well suited to natural swimming ponds. Mild Rogue Valley winters mean the pond may develop a surface freeze on the coldest nights but typically doesn't freeze solid. The aquatic plants and biology go dormant in winter and return in spring. The swimming season in this region generally runs from late spring through early fall, comparable to a conventional outdoor pool.
Can you add a waterfall or stream to a natural swimming pond?
Yes. Integrated waterfalls and stream sections are a natural fit, they add visual interest, sound, and help oxygenate the water, which supports biological filtration. Pacific Earthworks handles the full excavation, boulder work, liner, and plumbing to tie a waterfall or stream seamlessly into the pond design.
How long does it take to build a natural swimming pond?
Construction time depends on the size and complexity of the project, excavation volume, liner work, boulder and rock placement, plumbing, and surrounding grading all factor in. After construction, the biological filtration system needs a full growing season to fully establish before swimming. Contact Pacific Earthworks to discuss your timeline and site.
