Pondless Waterfalls
Pondless Waterfalls & Water Features, Southern Oregon
The sight and sound of a waterfall and stream with no open pond to maintain. Water disappears into a hidden gravel reservoir and recirculates, low-maintenance, kid-safe, and built to fit the natural character of your Rogue Valley property.
Overview
All the water, sound, and movement, none of the open pond
A pondless waterfall delivers everything people love about a water feature, the sound of falling water, the movement of a stream, the visual weight of natural boulders, without the open pond that typically comes with it. Water flows down over rock and stone, then disappears into a buried gravel and basin reservoir at the base. A submersible pump inside that reservoir pushes water back to the top, and the cycle repeats continuously.
Because there's no exposed body of water, pondless systems require dramatically less upkeep than a traditional pond, no algae management, no fish, no deep cleaning. You top off the reservoir periodically to replace evaporation, keep the pump clear, and the feature runs. They're well suited to families with young children or pets, and they work on properties of almost any size, including smaller yards where a full pond wouldn't fit.
Pacific Earthworks handles the complete build, design and boulder selection, excavation, basin and pump vault installation, liner and plumbing, waterfall and stream construction, and all surrounding grading and landscape tie-in.

Questions, Answered
Pondless Waterfall FAQs
What is a pondless waterfall?
A pondless waterfall is a recirculating water feature where water flows over boulders and down a stream or falls, then disappears into a buried gravel and basin reservoir at the base. A submersible pump inside the reservoir pushes water back up to the top to start the cycle again. You get all the sight and sound of a waterfall with no open pond to maintain, clean, or worry about.
How much does a pondless waterfall cost in Southern Oregon?
Cost depends on the size and height of the waterfall, the length of any stream section, the volume of the buried reservoir basin, the number and size of boulders, and the surrounding grading and landscaping. Smaller features start well below the cost of a full pond build. For an accurate estimate based on your site and vision, call (541) 512-5280 for a free consultation.
Is a pondless waterfall safe for kids and pets?
Yes, the absence of an open pond is precisely why pondless waterfalls are popular with families and pet owners. There is no standing water for children or animals to fall into. The water at the base disappears into a gravel-filled reservoir basin beneath the surface, so the feature is essentially self-contained and safe.
How much maintenance does a pondless waterfall need?
Maintenance is minimal compared to a traditional pond. You'll top off the reservoir periodically to replace evaporation and splash loss, check that the pump intake stays clear of debris, and occasionally clean the skimmer or filter mat if your system includes one. There's no pond algae to manage, no fish to care for, and no open water requiring chemical treatment.
Does a pondless waterfall use a lot of water or electricity?
Water consumption is limited to evaporation and splash loss, far less than an open pond of equivalent surface area. The pump runs on household current and can be sized to the feature; many homeowners run smaller systems on timers or shut them off during periods of inactivity. Overall operating cost is generally low.
Can you build a pondless waterfall on a slope or small yard?
Yes, a slope is actually ideal, because the natural grade creates the drop that makes the waterfall work without extensive excavation or fill. Smaller yards are also well suited to pondless features, since there's no pond footprint to accommodate. Pacific Earthworks can evaluate your site and design a feature that fits the available space and topography.
