Retaining Walls
Retaining Wall Construction in Southern Oregon
Boulder and engineered retaining walls, built with the drainage and base work that keep them standing for decades, across Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland and the rest of the Rogue Valley.
Overview
Walls that hold the hill, and the water behind it
A retaining wall has one job: hold back earth that wants to move. In the Rogue Valley's hilly, clay-heavy terrain, that's a tall order, and it's why so many walls built without proper drainage end up bulging, leaning, or collapsing within a few years.
Pacific Earthworks builds retaining walls the right way, from the ground up. We start with a solid, compacted base, set the wall true, and engineer drainage into it, drain rock, filter fabric, and perforated pipe, so groundwater never gets the chance to push it over. Whether you need a low garden terrace, a tall hillside wall, or a structural wall holding up a driveway, we build it to last.
From boulder walls that look right at home on a wooded Williams property to clean engineered walls in Medford and Ashland, we match the wall to your site, your load, and your budget.

Questions, Answered
Retaining Wall FAQs
How much does a retaining wall cost in Southern Oregon?
It depends on the wall's height and length, the material (boulder, segmental block, or poured concrete), site access, soil conditions, and the drainage and engineering required. Taller walls and difficult hillside access cost more because they need more excavation, base rock, and reinforcement. The best way to get an accurate number is a free on-site quote, call (541) 512-5280.
What type of retaining wall is best, boulder, block, or concrete?
Each has a place. Boulder (rock) walls are durable, natural-looking, and well suited to rural Southern Oregon properties. Segmental block gives a clean, uniform finish. Poured concrete offers maximum strength for tall or structural walls. We help you choose based on wall height, load, drainage, budget, and the look you want.
Do retaining walls need drainage?
Yes, water building up behind a wall is the number-one cause of failure. Every wall we build includes drainage designed in: drain rock, filter fabric, and perforated pipe where needed, so water moves through and away instead of pushing the wall over.
How tall can a wall be before it needs engineering?
As a general rule in Oregon, walls over about four feet of retained height, or walls supporting a surcharge like a driveway or structure, typically require engineering and a permit. We build to code and will tell you when your wall needs an engineer's design before we begin.
Can you build on a steep slope or hillside?
Yes, hillside and sloped lots are exactly where we work. Williams, Ashland, and much of the Rogue Valley are full of steep properties. We have the excavators and experience to cut, bench, and build walls on challenging terrain while controlling drainage and erosion.
How long does a retaining wall last?
A properly built wall with the correct base, backfill, and drainage can last for decades. Most premature failures come from skipped drainage or an inadequate base, the parts you can't see. That groundwork is exactly what we get right.
