Driveways & Gravel Roads in Southern Oregon
New gravel driveways, rural road construction, culverts, and driveway regrading, built with the base work and drainage that keep them solid through every Southern Oregon winter.
Overview
A driveway that drains is a driveway that lasts
Most gravel driveways in Southern Oregon don't fail because of wear, they fail because of water. A driveway without proper crown, cross-drains, and a solid base washes out in winter and potholes under load. Getting that groundwork right is the difference between a driveway you maintain every season and one that holds for years.
Pacific Earthworks builds and grades gravel driveways and rural roads on residential and rural properties throughout the Rogue Valley. We handle everything from the initial cut and base preparation to culvert installation, rock placement, and final grading. Whether you're putting in a short residential driveway, a long approach to a rural property, or a private road serving multiple structures, we size the base and drainage for your specific terrain and traffic.
If an existing driveway is rutting, washing, or soft in winter, we can diagnose the problem and fix it, whether that means a full regrade and fresh base rock or targeted drainage improvements to stop the cycling damage.

Questions, Answered
Driveway & Gravel Road FAQs
How much does a gravel driveway cost in Southern Oregon?
Cost depends on the length and width, how much excavation and grading the site requires, how many loads of base and surface rock are needed, whether culverts or drainage structures are part of the job, and how steep or remote the site is. A short flat driveway and a long rural road up a hillside require very different scopes of work. The best way to get a real number is a free on-site estimate, call (541) 512-5280.
What's the best gravel or base material for a driveway?
A properly built gravel driveway typically uses a compacted crushed rock base, often 3/4-minus or pit run depending on depth and load, topped with a finer surface rock. The right material depends on your soil type, expected traffic, and drainage. In clay-heavy Southern Oregon soils, a good base and proper crown are critical. We spec the materials and depth to match your site conditions.
Why does my driveway keep washing out or rutting?
Washouts and ruts almost always come down to inadequate drainage and an insufficient base. If water sheets across the surface instead of being directed off it, it erodes the rock. If the base below is thin or soft, traffic sinks it. Pacific Earthworks corrects both, proper crown, cross-drains or culverts where needed, and a compacted base that holds up through Southern Oregon's wet winters.
Do you install culverts and driveway drainage?
Yes. Culverts and cross-drains are a standard part of many driveway projects, especially on rural properties where water needs to pass under the driveway without washing it out. We size and install culverts, set them on proper grade, and make sure they're integrated with the overall drainage plan for the driveway.
Can you build a long or steep rural driveway?
Yes, long and steep rural driveways are common in the Rogue Valley and Williams area, and we build them regularly. Steep driveways need careful grading for traction and drainage, and cross-drains spaced to intercept runoff before it builds up speed. We design the grade and drainage to keep the surface stable and passable year-round.
How do you keep a gravel road from potholing?
Potholes form when fine material is lost through poor drainage and the base underneath gets saturated and unstable. The fix is the same as prevention: a solid compacted base, the right surface rock, proper crown so water sheds off rather than sitting, and cross-drains spaced correctly for the terrain. When we build or regrade a driveway, we address all of those factors so the surface holds up through the seasons.
